Play them stickless?

Can any of the more experienced drummers try playing these without sticks for a while and comment on the playability? I’ve been trying them without sticks by putting my thumbs over the button with a loose grip so that they have the right bounce to play faster notes. It’s secure enough in the hand because the button area depression provides a lip so that the things don’t slip and fly out of your hand.

I’m asking because I don’t have much experience with real drums, and I don’t want to get used to a technique that I’ll have to unlearn later if it turns out to be too limiting. But there’s a lot of convenience to removing them from the sticks and bands entirely so that you can tote them anywhere in your pocket, and play them anywhere discretely (almost) without bumping into stuff or people.
